Impossible Organ Concerts Nr 1
On 11 January 2020, the series “Unmögliche Orgelkonzerte”/”Impossible Organ Concerts” was started. The idea is to gain and keep interest in and enthusiasm for the organ in Rostock, though the instrument of St. Mary’s is in bad state. To make the concerts more attractive, it is allowed to visit the organ loft and the organ itself already during the concert, not only before or after.
It was a christmas concert. The music was “La Nativité du Seigneur”, nine meditations on christmas by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). It is a classic among the organ works from 20th century and was played by Karl-Bernhardin Kropf in St. Mary’s already in January 2008.
Despite of a temperature of 7° Celsius, an audience of approx. 120 was present. The places on the organ loft and the visiting possibility of its interior were well received, too.
Though there are some limitations, i. e. the manual keyboard range, this organ and St. Mary’s church are the best venue between Lübeck and Berlin to perform this music.
The next concert will take place before Easter and will contain music by J. S. Bach regarding lent and passion tide.
